Extensions Manager 2.0.2 and MacOS 7.5.3
----------------------------------------
If you've used EM 2.0.2 (the previoulsy patched version) with MacOS
7.5.3, read this section. If you haven't, just ignore it.
If you've used EM 2.0.2 (previoulsy patched version) with MacOS 7.5.3
you must have noticed that some of the disabled folders were identified
by a bullet (•), while others were identified by the string
" (Disabled)". But then if you removed EM 2.0.2 and used EM 3.0.3 you were
still stuck with the same problem. Why is that?
In 7.5.3 the way disabled folders are named has been changed slightly.
(EM 2.0.2 still works, because the OS keeps track of those folders by a
four-letter code and not by name.) In the new scheme the names of the
disabled folders are stored in the System 7.5 Update file in the fld# id=0
resource, and they take precedence over names used by EM 2.0.2. But
names used by EM 2.0.2 which are not in System 7.5 Update file initially are
copied there the first time EM 2.0.2 is used, and then they take
precedence over names used by other applications. That's why folders
with " (Disabled)" are mixed with folders with "•".
There is no way to get around this other than patching the user's'
System 7.5 Update file. I don't know how to do this, nor do I want to, so in
the new patch I replaced the "•" with " (Disabled)".
If you have had this problem and you're stuck with folders with mixed
names, you can (a) do nothing -- everything will work as it should, but
it's ugly; (b) reinstall the update -- hm, does anyone want to go
through that again? or (c) rename the folders according to the following
procedure.
Renaming "disabled" folders in 7.5.3
------------------------------------
If you don't like the names of the "disabled" folders in OS 7.5.3 you
can easily change them with ResEdit:
1. Make a copy of the System 7.5 Update file from your System folder.
2. Open the copy with ResEdit 2.1.3
3. Open the fld# 0 resource.
4. Edit the strings (e.g. I replaced everywhere " (Disabled)" with "|".
It takes least space.
5. Save.
6. Move the original System 7.5 Update file to another folder and put
the edited copy of System 7.5 Update into the System folder; make
sure it's called "System 7.5 Update" (without the quotes).
7. Restart.
8. Move all disabled control panels, extensions, etc., to their proper
folders.
9. Trash the old "disabled" folders.
10. Launch EM 2.0.3. The new "disabled" folders will appear and now you
can move back your extensions.
